Product Description

Ferric chloride (FeCl3), also known as ferric chloride, is a chloride of trivalent iron. It is deliquable, hydrolyzes in humid air, releases a lot of heat when dissolved in water, and produces a coffee-colored acidic solution. This solution can etch metals made of copper or even stainless steel.

Anhydrous ferric chloride is a strong Lewis acid and can be used as a catalyst for organic synthesis. The yellow-brown hexahydrate is a common commercial product of ferric chloride with the structure [FeCl2(H2O)4]Cl·2H2O (see chromium trichloride).
